Words - from conversation, from something I’ve read, from a thought that I’m curious about translating visually. Words drive my entire process, the shapes, textures and colors on my canvas. Words in themselves are an end, but their tone, inflection, delivery and context unfold into simple or complex meanings. The many layers within the basic human interaction that is communication is the impetus for my work. What transpires between the first layer – the black and white letters -- and the edited message received by the listener?

Words are not the only means by which we communicate. We are constantly bombarded with imagery meant to express some message, thought or feeling. Yet two people may understand or experience one image in two very different ways. Art communicates itself in layers just as the meaning of a conversation evolves as it occurs yet there is no end to what art can communicate. It’s constantly evolving with its audience. I aim for my artistic process to continue beyond the completion of a painting, I hope my work functions as a tool for interaction. My end goal is to mirror the complexity of what transpires in our everyday communications, and in turn, to inspire a dialogue among and with the viewers.
